The Hometown and Masterpiece of Muhammad Qashqari / Kaşgarlı Mahmud’un Eseri ve Yurdu

Qashqar is an important *cultural and trade center* of the ancient Tarim along the southern Silk Road. According to the Chinese historical record, it was known as “Shule” in the Han Dynasty. That may be a transcription of the ancient Uyghur word “Suluq”, which means “Rich with Water” However, the original meaning of Qashqar in ancient Uyghur is “Beautiful Relief”/ “Rich Place”/ “Jade Side”. The territory of the ancient Kingdom of ancient Qashqar covered approximately 252,900 square kilometers within today’s Qashqar-Kona-Shahar (Toqquzasak), Atush, Yengsa, Yupugha, Patzwat, Yarkent, Qaghiliq, Poskam, Makit, Maralbeshi, Akhchi, Aqtu, and Tashqurghan counties. The distance from Urumchi to Qashqar is more than 1,500 kilometers.

Muhammad Qashqari, (full name is Mahmud ibn Hussayin ibn Muhammad al-Qashqari; in Chinese as 穆罕默德. 喀什葛, Kaşgarlı Mahmud in Turkish) was born in Azik village of the Opal Township of Qashqar-Kona-Shahar (Toqquzasak) approximately at 1005. He was famous medieval Turkic linguist, lived in Qara-Khannid period (960-1250). He was a renowned linguist, lexicographer, and renowned medieval Uyghur scholar.

Mahmud Qashqari's work entitled Divani Lugatit Turk (Turki Tillar Divani), which was written in 1072. His encyclopedic work as literary-art and first-hand materials is very important academic source for studies of history, culture, ethnical customs, literature, language, and the dialectical differences of various Turkic people of Central Asia. Mahmud Qashqari died in 1102 at the age of 97 in Opal township of Qashqar, and was buried there. The Uyghur Autonomous Regional Museum renovated Qashqari’s mausoleum since 90s, and it is reopened on May 26, 2006 once again to tourists. This research examines through the hometown and work of Mahmud Qashqari from different aspects to provide the new insights into the research of Diwan Lughat at-Turk.
